Clipper care #5 of 5

Lastly...
it will eventually be time to buy a new blade. A new blade is a small price to pay for a clipper that delivers high quality and top performance over the long haul. i you have been good about steps 1 through 4 in clipper care the new blade Day can be farther away. it might take a few years. if you are not as good about sticking with steps 1 through 4 you will definitely need a new blade a lot sooner.

But the new blade the day you buy the clipper. This insures that you get the right one and insures that you have a new blade the day you need it. No emergencies. Chip a tooth. No problem. Drop a tool on a busy afternoon in the shop. No problem.

Change the blade (2 simple screws in most cases) and back to work you go. Buy another blade right away and drop it in the back of the drawer. You will have it when you need it.

Clipper care #4

it is time for step #4 of 5 in the clipper care series.
We have adjusted the clipper blade, we have brushed away clippings and we have oiled the blade... step #4 is to use our Andis Cool care 5inONE clipper spray.
Again, this is an every client, every time product.., required by law and approved for use in all 50 stares.
When to use cool care:
During hair cutting as a blade coolant - cools the surface of the blade, comfort for the client and reduced wear for the blade, good for the barber, too.
Before every cut as a light weight lubricant... not to take the place of clipper oil, but used in addition to andis clipper oil as a in between oilings lubricant.
After every client... as a blade cleaner, as a rust preventor and as a disinfectant. Shops and salons are damp, moist and humid places in the best of circumstances. Rust protection, a coating of cool care on the blade will prevent oxidization from forming on the blade. This leads to longer balde life.
In today's world good principles and practices of sanitation in the shop is just good business and good marketing. Spraying the blade with an approved disinfectant in front of the client, where the client can see it is happening is just good business.
One last step tomorrow and you will be a clipper care champion.
Thank you for stopping by for a quick read.

Clipper Care #3 of 5

Clipper care step number #3 is oiling. Andis clipper oil is the lifeblood of your clipper. It is amazing how just a few pennies of oil can be the difference between life and death for a clipper worth thousands of times more.
Every clipper, every trimmer, every client , every time is the saying.
We call it 5 point oiling... 5 drops of andis clipper oil on the blade. 1 drop at each inside rear corner of the moving blade and 3 drops don onto the running cutter blade teeth. Let the tool run for a few seconds to spread the oil between the blades. Blot up the excess oil and you are good to go.
Too much oil is just as bad as not enough. Not enough oil and the blade will run dry and drag and pull and dull and wear fast. Too much oil will attract dust, dirt and hair clippings... which makes gunk. Gunk will gunk up the blade.
Make this oiling a habit every time you pick up an electric cutting tool and you will get many more happy years and happy clients from your clippers and trimmers.
More in installment 4 tomorrow.
Thank you.
Happy clippering.

Tuesday, November 16, 2010

Clipper care #2

2 in a series of 5

Step 2 in clipper care is to brush off loose clippings from the blade area. We pack in a small clipper brush with some models... but these are just too small. Get a tooth brush, get a hair color (tint) brush or get a 99 cent fingernail brush from the beauty supply store. Brush off all the hair clippings in and around the blade area. These clippings can be like sand or gravel between the blades and the clipper blade teeth. Brush them all off out and away.

Brush the clipper blade with the clipper turned off. we want to brush off the clippings not clipper off the brush!

Step 3 tomorrow.

Clipper care, 5 easy steps

Last week we looked at a 5 part series on leveraging your educational investments. We got good comments. The 5 mini posts were easy to post and made for a great week of info... so... the theme will be extended... this week: Clipper care in 5 easy stems or installments. I will post 1 great element of clipper care every day for the week.

I will also post right here, right now the link to the andis clipper care and maintenance card. You can download it and use it as an ongoing reminder. Link HERE.

Today is post #1 of clipper care.

#1 Check and align your blade.
Before clippering, every client, every time hold the clipper sideways and sight along the baled edge. The blades should be parallel with the cutter blade set back just a slight bit. If the blade is crooked and a tooth is sticking out it will cut or nip a client. Use a screw driver to loosen the blade screws. Do not take them out. Just loosen them enough so you can wiggle the blade back into place. Tighten the screws by walking them down... do not tighten one all the way 'cuz if you do the blade will twist or squirm when the screw bottoms out. Walking the screws allows you to set the blade down even and in place. Once it is down tighten the screws all the way. Check it again one last time to be sure you have it where you want it.

Tomorrow is step #2

Leverage your education - #5

Last of the series for the week.
Ge the most form your investment in education.
Suggestion #5 - Modify
O.K.
You sorted through all the new ideas. You picked one you felt applied to your business and situation. You hatched a plan. You put it into play. You took a step back and assessed its success.
The next step is to Modify.
How to you tweak the idea for the next implementation?
You know how well it worked. You know what went right and what went not so right.
Here is where the magic happens. By working through steps 1 through 4 you have really LEARNED something. The modification step is where that new learning is applied to what all you knew before and what you now know to really make things happen.
It is time for a new plan... or the next version of this plan if you want to look at it that way.
Go back to step #2 and plan execution, implement and assess all over again.
if you are yearning for learning this process never stops. it is a cycle that repeat over and over again.

Please share your thoughts on this 5 step series and ideas. What have you learned? What have you used. How did it work for you.
Thank you.

Ivan

Leverage your education - #4

To get the most of your educational investments I am making a few suggestions. This is suggestion number 4 of 5 in this weeks series.
Suggestion #4 - Assessment.
O.K. so you tried it. How did it work? Were the results what you expected? How do you measure success?

If it is a technical skill... you will know right away. Step back. Take a look. Are you happy with the result? Is the client? This is easy to measure.

other ideas will be assessed differently. A marketing tactic? Did it bring in new clients? How many? At what cost? was it worth the time, effort and expense? How is your ROI? A retention tactic... It may be too soon to tell. Have a way to measure and a time frame in which you expect to see results. Hold yourself and your team accountable for the results of your efforts.

Discuss assessment ahead of time as a part of execution. What are we going to do? How will we do it? and how do we know we did it and got the results we were seeking.

You might even want to seek the assistance and input of a trusted outside advisor, someone who can be entirely objective. Everyone needs a coach and a mentor. This is a great role for that person... assist with assessment. How are we doing? A very important question when we seek to grow and move ahead.

The saying is... If you do not know where you are going how will you know when you get there? Have goals in mind from the start... Stephen Covey - "Begin with the end in mind".

Leverage your education - #3

Suggestion #3 - Implementation

It is time for implementation. This is Nike time. Just do it. This is where many fall down on using new ideas and concepts. They are exposed to an idea. They like it. They think it over... and then nothing happens. A short time later the idea is long forgotten. The key points are lost and the timeliness has faded away.

I always mention, in my live presentations, the 48 hour rule of barber and cosmetology education... that is to say... If you are exposed to something you like to think you can use, an idea or technical skill, you have 48 hours to put it into use or it is lost. The sooner you try it, the better chance you have to get it right and to make it a part of our regular practices and techniques.

Some if my execution tips include:

Test it. Try the idea on a non paying customer.
Train it. Be sure your team members are all on board with the idea.
Go slow. Do not spring the idea on all clients or customers or team members all at once. Guinea pig it along to be sure you have it "right"
Develop it. Have procedures to be sure you are to get the results you are after.

Remember, it is better to do it and to do it wrong than not to do it at all. You will never know unless you try.

A few good quotes to reflect upon in the area of go for it:

You miss 100% of the shots you do not take - Wayne Gretzgy

It is better to try and fail than never to have tried.

If not now, when?

I have not failed. I have just identified over 100 ways that do not work. - Thomas Edison

The definition of insanity is to do the same things over and over and to expect the results to be different.

The difference between successful people and unsuccessful people is that successful people do the things that unsuccessful people are unwilling to do.

Now, stop reading and get busy implementing that great new idea.

Tuesday, November 9, 2010

Leverage your education #2

Suggestion #2 - Execution
Determine how you will execute the new idea.
How will you use it?
How will it fit into the things you do and the way you do them?
What are you doing now that works with this new idea?
What will you need to change in the face of the inclusion of this new idea?

Think about how you will make this idea really work.

What will the idea truly bring to you or your customers?
Once we used suggestion 1 and feel the idea truly is relevant to you and your customers and your market it is time to hatch a plan for how you will make it work.

Who needs to be on board with the idea?
Who might need to be sold before you can roll it out?
Who are the stake holders in this idea and what is at stake for all of them?

Once you have a clear execution plan it is time for suggestion #3... Tune in tomorrow...

Leverage your education #1

I recently wrote an article on how to best leverage your investment in education, how to get the most out of a class or presentation. It was a short article for an online publication. I am not able to reproduced the article here. I do, however, want to share the info more widely.

The article offered 5 big suggestions. The descriptions were short, not 'nuf room for great detail. Over the next 5 blogs here I will explore 1 each of the suggestions in greater detail.

Suggestion number 1: Determine the relevance

When exposed to an idea or concept in a class, be it a technical skill, a business building tip or a management idea, determine its relevance to your situation. Ask a few questions...
Does this apply to our situation?
Do we have this problem?
Will this solution work for us?
Will our customers embrace this?
There amy be more questions. These are just a few to get you going.

Not all ideas translate to all situations. It can be a great idea, yet not a great one for YOU.

Look at others who have been successful with this idea. How is their situation similar or different from yours?

Do not over think it. Some ideas are simply just good. But do not NOT think it over either. Think before you leap.

short, but longer version of trend

This is a longer version of the shorter trend look I mentioned yesterday. I would like to see the short part a bit shorter, clipper short, so as to bump up the contrast just a bit more, but, hey, you know me and you know what I like. Still, a popular look and fun to cut.

Ladies trend - Short cut, long top

I saw a lot of these as well in my London UK Salon International trend spotting. Quite short ladies clipper cuts with long top and fringe sections. These are a great combination of a clipper cut and a razor cut... Plus they require both a blow dryer and a flat iron. This look is an Andis fantasy looking for a place to happen... clipper, trimmer, dryer, iron. you will need them all.

Andis at Salon International - Big sellers

The T-Liner Combo takes the title for the 2nd year in a row as the best seller at Salon International for Andis. Trimmers overall sold very well. No surprise there. the T-Light was the first tool to sell out entirely. The PMC-2 sold quite well bolstered in a large part by MK's super precision clipper art design work. he will in top form. The British flag / English Bulldog design was by far the crowd favorite. Follow MK on Facebook at MK HSA for ongoing insights into the great things he is doing with Andis.
The RACD was a hit as a compact and powerful clipper. The Power master in its second year found both new buyers and had last year buyers bringing tales of great success with the tools. it is nice when a buyer of our tools from a prior year stops by to say thank you and tell us how happy they have been with a purchase form the last event - Nice!

New comb idea

This is the new Denman Pro Edge comb. I met the inventor, a barber with an idea. I have a few samples to use this weekend in London at the Salon International show. We will see just how well it works. The ridge is supposed to keep the shear on the clipper in place. Seeme to me to be a great training aid for new haircutters... Might be good for veterans, too. I will report back after I have tried it. I just wanted you all to see it first.

Clipper Flashback

Take a look at this one. One of our educators was offered this clipper by a client. He asked if I wanted it. Of course I said yes. I had to pay a little for it, likely more than it cost new, but, it is an oldie but a goodie. There is very little use and wear on it. It is in the original box with all the pieces included. It was sold as a home use tool. You can tell by the image and wording on the box. This is another great addition to my collection. Down the road I will share a few more tools from my clipper archive. This one is quite heavy by today's standards, but beyond that, thee amazing thing is how much the clipper is so very similar to modern tools. In many ways we have come very far... In many ways we have not needed to.

Super good, Super red

Andis was given the trophy in the pic as a thank you for donating schools supplies for a back to school supply drive sponsored by a local barber shop. Kenny and the Guys at Smooth Cuts barber shop in Kenosha, WI did a great thing by giving away FREE haircuts for back to school for a whole lot of kids. Local businesses and individuals made donations of needed schools supplies. Kids who came in for cuts could pick up supplies from this stash. It was a great promotion and effort for the community.

By the way, right next to the trophy is the new inferno red Andis Superliner... A hot red color that has been popular on a few Andis tools recently.... and the new design blade and blade spring system. The blade had a new tooth pattern for improved feeding and cutting... and Super crisp and clean lines and edges. The tension spring mechanism is a new design as well. This new design provides better cutting action and it it waaaaay easier to adjust and zero gap. Stay tuned... we will have a new youtube video later this week on how to zero gap with this new blade system... HINT... it is MUCH easier and faster and you will love it.

The Salon International show is next weekend in London, UK. I will be presenting there on the Andis stage. I am also there to look and learn. I use this annual trip to see what is going on "over there" and what we can bring "over here" for a heads-up on upcoming trend. I always learn a lot and come back with great ideas. This year I am hooping to take more pictures than I typically do. I am a see it and take it in guy. it is hard for me to remember to stop and snap a pic so I can share it with everyone else. Stay tuned for pics from the trip this year. Now that I have committed to it here in the blog... I will HAVE to bring back pics... Hold me accountable.

That is right. We built a barber shop, a temporary one at a pet show recently. The backdrop looks great. the set up was a lot o fun. The attendees loved it. the Bradley Caldwell Show in Atlantic City, NJ was a great place to debut this set up. Look for the mini shop to appear at other shows in the future.

Fun stuff at a show

This is just a simple design we did for fun on a student at a recent show. Styliner II for the lines... Graf etch pencils for the color. Easy and fun. Anyone can do it. Start small and smiple like this. Work your skills up to fancier things.

Texturizing blade video

The Andis BG series UltraEdge Texturizing blade... what we call the T-24 is a sleeper of a blade. Not enough cutters know about it and not enough cutters use it. It does great things. We did a short video to show off its basic capabilities... it removes 24% (hence, T for texture and 24 for the amount of the hair it takes out) of the hair that feeds through the still blade. it features a unique 5 tooth cutter balde to make this happen. there is a longer tooth on the non moving blade for control of the flow of hair. Bottom line... GREAT blade. if you do not have one... You have to get one.

Have a look at the video here.

The UnHairShow - The FREE table

We will have a FREE table at the next UnHairShow. This will be a table with FREE stuff, flyers, literature, samples, etc. Anything we can get for FREE that we can give for FREE that a clipper cutter would have an interest in. Presenters can provide us with stuff to place on the table. A vendor who can not be there can just send stuff for the FREE table. All materials Will be first come, first served, while supplies last.

This will be a great additional element to the UnHairShow concept.

Left over materials after each event will be either retained for the next event or tossed out. Materials will NOT be returned to the vendor... Unless the vendor wishes to pay for them to be shipped back... the key to all of this is that the UnHairShow remains FREE... so let's not find ways to add cost where cost is not needed.

More info isright here.

The UnHairShow - follow up - attendance

The first UnHairShow was this past Monday. I am recapping elements of it as we move ahead.

Attendance was good and could have been better. We would love to see more local barbers attending. We would love to see female cosmetology professionals there, too. We are welcoming to non-licensed clipper cutting enthusiasts as well. We chose a school location for our first event because we knew with the students there we would be guaranteed at least a small crowd. this is what we got... just a few non-students were there. An O.K. start to the idea... and we will raise the level of outside participation every time we do the UnHairShow.

we have a few ideas to improve attendance. 1 is to do a postcard. 1 side to promote attendance... the other to promote the opportunity to present. we would pass these out to shops and salons in the general area of the event. if we host at a school we would also give the post cards to students and ask them to pass them to to shops and salons near their homes. the idea is to keep promotion simple and FREE... or as close to FREE as we can make it... in keeping with the FREE concept of the UnHairShow.

We used facebook and twitter for this past event. We will also use a YouTube video to get the word out as well.

We are open to ideas... please share them... get to me with comments here on the blog or with an email to me at expert@andisco.com

Go to the UnHairShow web site http://unhairshow.com for more details too.

Thank you.

Another rachael? ever?

Will there ever be another Rachael? Article here.

I do not think so either... The next thing of this proportion will be started on the street. User created content makes bigger exposure posible in bigger ways... and there is more to be exposed to... More options and choices mean that fewer people will opt for the same thing... individuality rules the day and drives the looks... and it is a good thing.

Clipper cutter word of the week

Here is your Ivan Zoot / Andis / ClipperGuy word of the week for week 22, 2010.

Undercut – A hairstyle in which the perimeter is cut short with a clipper and the interior is left longer to hang over this clippered area. A very popular style with young boys and teenagers in the early 1990s. Originally popularized by surfers and skateboarders on the U.S. west coast, it also referred to as a “surfer” cut or a “skater” cut.

I will post again later with a pic or 2 of undercut hair styles...
More to come.

Join an association – In the early days of organized haircutting, you had to be a member of the guild. Those days are gone. Today, membership in local, state and national trade associations provides a vital connection to like-minded professionals and the greater world of your business. Associations offer access to information and specialty support services. Trade groups offer benefits like collective buying power and discounted insurance rates. The opportunity to network with other owners can provide solutions to problems and powerful shared experiences. Entrepreneurial endeavors are singular by nature. Tapping into the power of collective cooperation can help you and your business rise to unprecedented levels.

Film at 11 – Maintain a thin film of oil between the running blades of the clipper. If you can see oil, you are using too much oil.

The name of this tip is all about that thin film of oil betweem the blades... nothing can be more important.

Here is a great Youtube video to support this important tip.

clipper business tip week 20, 2010

Here is your Ivan Zoot / ClipperGuy / Andis business builder tip of the week for week 20, 2010

Celebrate firsts – First haircuts for little guys are a cultural rite of passage. Make a celebration out of these events. Snap a photo to be displayed on the wall in the shop. Make a second one to be given to mom on the next visit. Have small coin envelopes on hand for a few keepsake clippings. First haircut certificates can be simple, low cost fun. You can be sure Grandma, Grampa and many other relatives will see this marketing piece in the weeks that follow.

Don't we all remember our first haircut... the first haircut of our kids, etc.?

clipper business tip of the week, week 19, 2010

Here is your Ivan Zoot / Andis / ClipperGuy buisness builder tip of the week for week 19, 2010.

Ask for referrals – Ask every client to refer a friend. There is no simpler way to build business. Do not feel you are above asking. People like to refer their friends and family to service providers that they enjoy. Print special referrer cards to pass out. There is no need to pay a referral bounty, but in some cases a referrer discount as a thank you is a great incentive.

it does not get more back-to-school basic than this one.

Radial Cutting – A panel cutting technique in which overlapping sections radiate out from a common center point of origin like slices cut from a pie. Typically used in cutting interiors.

Clipper Business tip of the week

Here is your Ivan Zoot / Andis business builder tip of the week for week 17, 2010

Make telephone calls – A thank you phone call to a new client or to a client referrer is a priceless relationship builder. Make this call in the morning, during the week when you are unlikely to catch him. A short message of thanks and see you again soon on their answering machine goes a long way. Confirmation phone calls for pre-booked clients will reduce no-shows. Leave a reminder message mentioning there is no need to call unless the appointment is to be changed. Many clients will keep the appointment just to not have to make the call to move it.

Use the phone to make $

clipper cutter word of the week, week 17, 2010

Here is your Ivan Zoot / Andis word of the week for week 17, 2010.

This weeks word is:

Panel – A vertical cutting section extending from the perimeter into the blending area at the crestline.

Panel cutting is a key to classic barbering... break the head down into a series of vertical panels so as to work your way through the cut... break it down into small haircuts and link them together. This makes clipper cutting easier.

clipper tip of the week, week 16, 2010

Here is your Ivan Zoot / Andis clipper tip of the week for week 16, 2010.

This one is another clipper care and maintenance tip.

Dip In – Blade dip cleaner (like Andis Blade Care 7inONE) is a daily must-do to flush out all those clippings and to clean and lubricate your clipper blades.

It is all about establishing a routine. A barber asked me at a class this week if he MUST follow my cleaning instructions in exactly the order I gave them. My answer was that no, exact order is not as important as establishing a regular routine and following it. That "every clipper, every trimmer, every client, every time" saying that I use all the time is the idea. Build a habit. Get a rhythm going and stick with it.

For all the clipper tips have a look here at my clipperguy says, Get clippering clipper tips book.

Clipper cutter word of the week, week 16, 2010

Here is yout Ivan Zoot / Andis word of the week for week 16, 2010.
This week is letter O.
Your clipper cutter vocabulary word of the week is:

Occipital Bone/Area – The area at the center back widest point of the cranial structure. Prominence in this area will vary from one client to the next.

Boy do I talk about this one a lot. This is a key spot on the head for clipper cutters as we speak of tapering and layering and transitions.

This image shows the specific area of the head we are talking about.

If you like these vocabulary words and do not want then 1 at a time... get the whole book of 'em here. My ClipperGuy says Talk The Talk book. The complete clipper cutter glossary.

Word of the week

Hello.
it is the day for the Ivan Zoot / ClipperGuy / Andi word of the week for week 15, 2010.
The letter of the week is N.
The word of the week is:
Nape – The lower rear area of the head beneath the occipital bone from ear to ear.
The nape area is one we talk about a lot in he world of clipper cutting because the nape of the next is the home of the focal point of classic tapered haircuts... the hold grail of the world of the clipper cutter.

Clipper business tip of the week, week 14, 2010

Here is your Ivan Zoot / Andis business builder tip of the week for week 14, 2010.

Keep client records – Keep basic contact and information records on your client base. This data is priceless for executing marketing programs and managing your business. Electronic data is better than file cards, but file cards are better than nothing. With an electronic database, you can sort and build lists based on any field. This information is powerful for targeted strategic marketing initiatives.

The computer age in which we live makes this easier and makes all of the posibilities behind it that much more powerful. Talk to a salesperson from a computer system company to learn of all of the possibilities.

Clipper Tip of the week, week 14, 2010

Here is your Ivan Zoot / Andis clipper tip of the week for week 14, 2010...

Get Slippery, Stay Slippery – A few drops of clipper oil, frequently (every haircut), is the key to long and happy clipper life.

I will never talk about this enough... Oil your clipper... Oil your clipper... Oil your clipper.

When a clipper omes back to a repair center for service... most often... more than 90% of the time... the problem can be traced back to insufficient oil.

Just a few drops, regularily can make a world of difference.

Monday, April 5, 2010

Word of the week, week 14, 2010

Here is your Ivan Zoot / Andis word of the week for week 14, 2010.
I fell off the blog band wagon last week... was a busy one with shows, moving my office, etc.
But, this week we are back on it with a vengeance.

This week is the letter M.
Your word of the week is:
Magnetic Motor Clipper – A clipper design in which a coil winding powers a reciprocating armature. A spring returns the blade to the starting position. The cutter blade is attached to the armature. This clipper design features high blade speed with low torque.
Mag motor clippers are ideal for classic barbering on dry hair. They are typically tapering told for cutting in the bottom half of the head.

The Andis Master is the king of the hill in this category.

Business builder tip of the week, week 13, 2010

Here is your Ivan Zoot / ClipperGuy / Andis business Builder tip of the week for week 13, 2010.

Week 13
Track the weather – Keep a log book of the weather as a part of your business tracking. All the major retailers do this. Historical data, the more the better, helps you plan scheduling, understand trends and forecast for growth. Do not make this too complicated. Key information should include temperature, precipitation and cloud cover. When this information is combined with historical sales statistics, you are armed to make better business decisions.

Might seem goofy... but it is really important. More info = better decisions.

Clipper cutting word of the week, the letter L

Here is your Ivan Zoot / Andis clipper cutting vocabulary word of the week for week 13, 2010.

This week it is time for the letter L.

Layer Cutting – Haircutting technique in which a progression of length is created, increasing from the interior of the head to the perimeter. This creates the effect of the hair lying in layers.

In simple terms: Layering is created any time hair is held up away from the head at an angle higher than parallel to the floor. The stacked look of the ends of the hair in the perimeter of the haircut is caller graduation... but from the top down it is called layering. Increased layering and uniform layering are forms of layering to be discussed in specific later in the week.

Here is a basic layered look on ladies longer hair.

Here is one on a guy.

This is a small price to pay in time and a part to insure the peak performance of your quality tool. watch for a YouTube vid soon on how to change this part.

In this drawing the blade drive is part number 22.

Inspirational Quotes

I love inspirational quotes. I save them. I share them.
One of my favorite sources of inspiration is Og mandino.
I stumbled upon a web site with a treasure trove of Og mandino quotes. I will share a few here from time to time.

The Og Mandino book The Greatest Salesman in the world has always been one of my favorites. http://www.amazon.com/Greatest-Secret-World-Og-Mandino/dp/0553280384/ref=sr_1_6?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1268764180&sr=8-6 Here is the link for that book. Warning... The book does have a pretty strong religious angle... Just a warning... the book is great... even if it is not your religion of choice. The message is still solid.

This weeks quote:

Act now. For now is all you have.

Word of the week

This is your Ivan Zoot / Andis word of the week for week 12, 2010.
This week is the letter J

Jarhead – A high and tight military haircut in which the upper interior is cut in a short uniform and blended way up past the crestline. Gets its name from having the look of the screw-on lid of a mason jar.

Here is a pic of a jarhead hair cut. Not the best image I coould find, but, you get the idea.

Send postcards – Once you have begun capturing client information, use it. Thank you postcards for new clients are a nice touch. Reminder postcards for prebookers reduce no-shows. Discount postcards for referrers of new clients help to keep the referrals coming. They are fast and easy to complete and they are less expensive than letter stamps too. You can fill out all the cards for the day just before you leave and pop them in the mail on the way home. Your local copy shop can print them up very inexpensively. You can use fill-in templates to keep it simple.

In this day of extreme high tech, a little low tech can go a long way. Post cards are as old as the Pony Express, but still just as effective.

Here is your Ivan Zoot / Andis clipper tip of the week for week 10, 2010

Snap On – Always engage a detachable blade on a clipper when the clipper is running. This avoids damaging the drive pin.

High powered, detachable blade clippers are more popular than ever... and there are a few important points that are different than on the kinds of clippers. This tip for proper blade engagement is one of them. My reminder is On, On / Off either. You put a blade on when the clipper is on. You can take a blade off when the clipper is on or off... but on, on.

Here is a Youtube video on just this subject. watch!

Word of the week, week 11, 2010

Here is your Ivan Zoot / Clipperguy / Andis clipper word of the week for week 11, 2010. We are up to the letter I.

Induction Cut – An all-over 000 clipper cut. Gets its name from the haircuts received on induction day into the U.S. Military. Slightly shorter than a burr cut. Slightly longer than a dry shave. Welcome to boot camp. This one is a fave with home hair cutters the world over. This is also known as an OOPS cut. You try a hair cut. OOPS. Things do not go well. You take it all down and start over. This is your hair cut.

Word of the week.

Hello.
Here is your Ivan Zoot / Andis Clipper cutting vocabulary word of the week for week 10, 2010. This week we are at the letter H... There are a lot of H words in the Hair business.

Hands-On Workshop – A clipper cutting class in which participants watch a demonstrated technique and then attempt to replicate it on a model or mannequin on the spot.

I/we do not do nearly enough of these each year... and that is too bad since this is the best way to learn clipper cutting.

The next one coming up is on Saturday, June 5, 2010 in Orlando, FL in advance of the Premiere Beauty Show.

Go "here for more information and to resister for this hands-on workshop. Space is limited. Do not wait to sign up.

Read this!

Just sharing what I am reading. I read this. You should too.
Seth Godin. I have read lots of his stuff. I do not seem to have read them in order as this is his latest ... and I have now started another form him which is an earlier work. I can not keep track.., but I do not miss anything he writes. basic premise... be a linchpin, not just a cog i the machine. Do not take this the wrong way... but, I believe on this one he was preaching to the choir. I think I am a linchpin. Are you?

Clipper tip of the week

Hello.
Here is your Ivan Zoot / Andis clipper tip of the week for week 9, 2010.

Be Selfish – Never share your tools. Everyone needs to own, bring, use and maintain his/her own equipment.

This is a great tip to share just days before one of the largest hair shows in North America. better deals and more tools than you can shake a clipper comb at. I hope you have saved your tips. Come early, stay late. Shop hard and get all the tools you need to be armed and dangerous in the shop.

Here is the web site for the IBS NYC show.

Andis clipper vocabulary word of the week

Here is your Ivan Zoot / Andis vocabulary word of the week for this week.

Geometric Style – The squareness strived for when creating flattop styles and many masculine haircut silhouettes.

This squareness or strong geometry is one of the keys to great men's hair cutting. Vertical sectioning at the sides and palm to palm cutting are great ways to encourage this squareness. Longer shears also aid in building square shapes, especially when cutting the hair on the top of the head.

This cut shows strong geometry. "http://haircutsformen.org/buzz/haircuts/buzz177.htm

Business builder tip of the week, week 8, 2010

Here is your Andis / Clipperguy business builder tip of the week for week 8, 2010.

Take walk-ins – Enthusiastically take walk-in clients in between your booked appointments. Walk-ins are new clients excited to be found or ongoing customers whose lives just do not fit with making appointments. I used to take 2 appointments per hour and fill the spots between with at least 2 walk-ins each half hour. This kept my chair full all day with minimum six clients per hour. This kept the waiting room turning over rapidly. In just a short time clients came to know that at 10 and 40 after the hour an appointment would be hopping out of the chair and I would be ready for a walk-in. Maximize your time and the time of your busy clients.

Business Builder tip - week 7, 2010

This is your Andis / Ivan Zoot / ClipperGuy business Builder tip of the week for week 7, 2010

Offer club cards – Everyone likes to be a member of the club. Club cards for preferred clients, prepaid monthly subscription clients or frequent fliers are great ways build brand loyalty. “buy 10 get 1 FREE” cards are a great way to retain clients. With five punches on the card the client is half way to a freebie. He is not likely to wander off. Prepay clubs, a flat fee for unlimited services for a whole month, quarter or year, are great business builders. Selling a card for an ongoing take-home product discount can be a great retail sales builder. Some shops even use bar codes on the card to manage client file database information. It does not have to be complicated or electronic to be powerful for your shop.

Heads to cut at Bronner show needed

I need a few heads. My Andis class is on Sunday afternoon at Bronner bros Show this weekend.
I need a few heads to clipper cut/demo. I am looking for an afro... a bit long and out of shape to cut down and get it under control. I am also looking for a flat top. Either a Caucasian, Asian or Hispanic male for a classic, short flat top or a textured head/African American for a classic 1980's high top box cut, think Arsenio Hall from the 80's.
If you live in the ATL, GA area and want a great FREE clipper cut. Or if you know of someone... please get them in touch with me.
Please send me an email and let's set it up.
