Hands-on learning opportunity

Hands-on learning is the best way to master clipper cutting. These hands-on opportunities do not come along too often. Hands on classes cost just a bit more to attend... but are well worth it. The class sizes are smaller. There are costs involved. mannequins are included. But the big upside is the opportunity to put what you learn into immediate practice. Limited class size provides great attention. There is really no better way to learn clipper cutting.

Andis and I are offering a hands-on program at the Premiere Show in Orlando, FL this year. Saturday, June 6 at the convention center. Space is VERY limited. First come first served, so you must register early. This event WILL sell out. Do not miss it.

You will see and cut a classic taper, an Andis 4 minute fade and a classic flat top. You will see a demo of the Andis Revolution Cutting system, the notion of economy of motion.

You will leave with a stack of handouts with technical breakdowns of all the cuts you experience.

This is the best chance to make the most progress in your development as a world class clipper cutter that is to be offered in 2009

Ed Hardy, hardly designs

Ed Hardy, Hardly designs
What is with this stuff? Lots of it to be seen at ISSE. There was a big corner of it at the store in the United terminal at LAX on the way home… I stopped to look it over… Hats for $68? T-shirts for $89… in today’s economy? Who are you kidding? Played out against the backdrop of all the body ink that was to be seen on the floor at ISSE as well as out and about on the streets in LA the Ed Hardy designs seem a bit quaint and simple. Hardly worth the expense to be a trendsetter. Maybe we call it “Ed Hardly” as in , “hardly worth it”.

If you do not know what I am talking ablut, look here:

In the schoolyard

This is a big school week. I have 9 classes at 9 schools over three days in Florida. The cosmetology and barber school business is booming. Now is the time for job and skills training. Get yourself to the schoolyard.

A recent visit to a school was a powerful one for me and the school I visited.

Profile Barber Institute, Summerville, SC hosted a recent Andis Academy on the Road event. Roderick Samuels has starred in a YouTube vid for Andis and is a great Andis supporter. He agreed to open up his new advanced professional development facility to Andis. We were the first outside vendor to use the new space. It is big and airy and when Roderick is done building it out I am sure the space will be one of the best professional Barber and beauty advanced education centers in the country. Andis and I look forward to our next opportunity to be invited back to present there again. We had great modes. We had local barbers. We had barber students from Roderick’s undergrad school. It was a nice group and the beginning of a lot of success that will come from Profile barber institute. And be on the lookout for Roderick. He will be appearing on stage with Andis at the IBS NY show in late April. Do not miss it.

I could write a book

I could write a book

I could write a book. I bet you have said that. Anyone who serves the public has said that at one time, or more likely, nearly once each day. Working behind a chair you meet interesting people. You hear amazing stories. You interact with unique personalities. Many times you are left with a feeling that is a combination of “no one would believe me if I told them this stuff” and “truth is stranger than fiction”.

Here is your opportunity to share your stories. First of all, I will believe your stories because I have more than a few amazing ones of my own. Second, I will help you share your stories with others. Get your stories down on paper. Change the manes and the places just enough so as to protect the innocent and not-so-innocent. Send your stories to me. I will publish your stories right here in my blog for others to enjoy. We will surely laugh, cry and be horrified right along with you.

This will be fun and funny, and maybe a bit scary too.

I will be committing to paper a few of the greatest hits of my time behind the chair and sharing them too. I am sure to have enough material to publish one “Tales From Behind The Chair” story every week.

Twitter on the rise!

I just announced this week that I will begin to keep the world informed about my adventures through Twitter. So far the reception has been good. You all are starting to sing up and follow my "tweets".
I do not think I am on the cutting edge... I am just trying to keep up with technology and stay connected.
Twitter made a big jump to mainstream last night. Jay Leno had Ellen on and they spent nearly 6 min discussing her recent adoption of Twitter and the fun she is having with it. Exposure like that will propel the technology forward.
Bottom line... You need to get hooked up with Twitter. Follow me, follow others who interest you. Set up your own account and get tweeting yourself.

Clipper Cuts for Charity

I cut hair for 3 hours today at the Hair Place in Florence, SC. Lisa Penny is a good friend of the Andis Company and a 3rd generation barber. I was in he SC/NC area for a meeting... A great time to stop in for a visit, meet dad, Bob Penny and cut some hair to raise funds for a local children's hospital. I got the shop and the event on the 6 and 10 p.m. newscast and in tomorrows newspaper. Not bad for a days work.
Tank you to all who came out in support of this fun event.

Mr. Flat Top

Mr. Flat top
I am known as ClipperGuy. I should not be surprised to learn that there is a Mr Flat top. I know this because I met him at a show recently. I think his real name is Paul. I am not sure and it does not matter. I can not imagine calling him anything else. He IS Mr. Flat top. He wears a flat top. He cuts a lot of flat tops. He cuts them very well He had an album of pictures to prove it. Next time I am in MA I am to make a trip to see him and have him cut a flat top for me. I have his contact info if you want to go see him. Let me know. Please tell him that ClipperGuy sent you. Mr. Flattop @ barbers Nook II 79 Main Street, Webster, MA.

Roderick Samuels

Rodrick Samuels
“It is time to put your man pants on” This is my favorite quote from Rodrick Samuels. Rodrick owns Profile Barber Institute in Charleston, SC. He trains and mentors to young people coming up in out business. Apparently this is a phrase he uses often to inspire students to step up to their responsibilities to themselves, their craft and their community. I like it. I can see him saying it. Rodrick is a talented and caring instructor. He taped a few educational videos for Andis while we spent time together at a recent industry event. Nearly all the taping was done in single takes. He is a true professional.

I am doing a class/presentation with Roderick next week in Charleston, SC. I am sure we will rock it together.

Check out Roderick's Andis YouTube vid:
