Here is your Ivan Zoot / Andis vocabulary word of the week for this week.
Geometric Style – The squareness strived for when creating flattop styles and many masculine haircut silhouettes.
This squareness or strong geometry is one of the keys to great men's hair cutting. Vertical sectioning at the sides and palm to palm cutting are great ways to encourage this squareness. Longer shears also aid in building square shapes, especially when cutting the hair on the top of the head.
This cut shows strong geometry. "http://haircutsformen.org/buzz/haircuts/buzz177.htm

Business builder tip of the week, week 8, 2010
Here is your Andis / Clipperguy business builder tip of the week for week 8, 2010.
Take walk-ins – Enthusiastically take walk-in clients in between your booked appointments. Walk-ins are new clients excited to be found or ongoing customers whose lives just do not fit with making appointments. I used to take 2 appointments per hour and fill the spots between with at least 2 walk-ins each half hour. This kept my chair full all day with minimum six clients per hour. This kept the waiting room turning over rapidly. In just a short time clients came to know that at 10 and 40 after the hour an appointment would be hopping out of the chair and I would be ready for a walk-in. Maximize your time and the time of your busy clients.

Business Builder tip - week 7, 2010
This is your Andis / Ivan Zoot / ClipperGuy business Builder tip of the week for week 7, 2010
Offer club cards – Everyone likes to be a member of the club. Club cards for preferred clients, prepaid monthly subscription clients or frequent fliers are great ways build brand loyalty. “buy 10 get 1 FREE” cards are a great way to retain clients. With five punches on the card the client is half way to a freebie. He is not likely to wander off. Prepay clubs, a flat fee for unlimited services for a whole month, quarter or year, are great business builders. Selling a card for an ongoing take-home product discount can be a great retail sales builder. Some shops even use bar codes on the card to manage client file database information. It does not have to be complicated or electronic to be powerful for your shop.
If you like these tips you can buy the entire 52 week, ClipperGuy Says... Get Busy book here = http://www.blurb.com/bookstore/detail/215247

Heads to cut at Bronner show needed
I need a few heads. My Andis class is on Sunday afternoon at Bronner bros Show this weekend.
I need a few heads to clipper cut/demo. I am looking for an afro... a bit long and out of shape to cut down and get it under control. I am also looking for a flat top. Either a Caucasian, Asian or Hispanic male for a classic, short flat top or a textured head/African American for a classic 1980's high top box cut, think Arsenio Hall from the 80's.
If you live in the ATL, GA area and want a great FREE clipper cut. Or if you know of someone... please get them in touch with me.
Please send me an email and let's set it up.

Busines builder tip of the week, week 6, 2010
Here is your Andis business builder tip of the week for week 6, 2010.
Always important... and the source of much arguing in many shops...
Mind the messages – Be aware of the radio station and the television channel that you broadcast in the shop. Are the messages and images you are exposing your clients to in keeping with the mood and feel of the business you are trying to build? Is the radio playing ads for other haircutting businesses? Is the television program in conflict with the values and temperaments of the clients you wish to retain? Is that magazine cover displaying an image that is appropriate for ALL of your traffic? Be sure the messages you support are supporting the growth of your business.
To me this one is very basic. But is it lost on many folks. here in Chicago we have one large salon/spa chain. They buy HUGE amounts of radio time during the holiday season to promote and sell gift certificates. Good for them, but, Many times I have heard their commercials playing on the radio while sitting in another shop. Bad for that shop. Mind the messages. In my shop we would play different radio stations during different parts of the day to reflect the tastes of our traffic. Today, if I had a shop, I would be playing mixes I created myself on my ipod.

Beer and hair cuts
O.K.,
So Miller Beer decided to do something different for their Super Bowl ads. They decided to feature 4 classic American small businesses in their ads. Real, hard working Americans with the entrepreneurial spirit. They decide to showcase they kind of business that would NEVER have the $ to buy an ad at the super bowl. Neat idea.
So, what did they pick? What made the cut? What was determined to be a classic example of a classic American small business? Of course, you know... A Barber Shop. That is right... when big corporate America went looking for an example of a classic American business, they went straight to the barber shop. Not a hair salon. Not a chain salon. Not a big fancy day spa. They went to a 50 year old American barber shop filled with real looking barber guys who cut real guys hair.
I love it. The classic American barber shop is here to stay and doing just fine thank you.
I think I will go get my hair cut.

Clipper Vocab word of the week, week 5, 2010
Welcome to your Andis / Ivan Zoot / ClipperGuy clipper cutting word of the week for week 5, 2010. Last week the letter was P... this week would be Q, but I do not have a Q word, so we go to R.
Radial Cutting – A panel cutting technique in which overlapping sections radiate out from a common center point of origin like slices cut from a pie. Typically used in cutting interiors.
Your first section will become your guide. Every section after that contains 1/2 of the prior section and 1/2 uncut hair living next door... So, section 1 becomes the guide for section 2 to be cut. section 2 becomes the guide for section 3, section 3 becomes the guide for section 4. It is a classic, traveling guide. Do not carry back to the first section. As long as you follow the section and use each for the next this is an efficient way to layer interiors.
Thinking like a clock, you first section will usually be taken at the center back (6 O'clock) or at high noon (right up front). I usually work may way around one side in one direction. then I will go back to the original section and work my way out the other side. In this way section 1 is used twice. Once for section 2 on one side and once for section "2" on the other. makes sense? I thought so.
if you like the ClipperGuy vocab words but do not have the patience to wait each week for them all... skip ahead buy buying the entire book. ClipperGuy Says... Talk the Talk. You will love it.

Business Builder tip of the week, week 5, 2010
Welcome to your Andis / Ivan Zoot / ClipperGuy business builder tip of the week for week 5, 2010
Rebook – Rebooking, the art of booking a client’s next appointment before they leave the shop, is the single most important non-technical skill that a clipper cutter can develop. Filling spots for the future insures your chair is occupied. Locking in clients for the next cut provides a buffer against competing shops. Setting the interval between cuts discourages appointment stretching. You will see the same client more times in every year, thereby increasing your income even before new clients are recruited.
In a tight economy when clients are prone to stretching the time between appointments this is even more important. 1 more appointment per year for every head that sits in your chair can mean BIG additional $ for you for the year... The stats are amazing... a 6 week client who stretches out to every 8 weeks costs you 25% of your annual revenue... and they still like you and they have not taken their business elsewhere. The flip side... an 8 week client who you can tighten up to visiting every 6 weeks becomes a 33% increase in revenue for the year... and you have spend $0 on advertising, promotion or new referrals.
If you do not take appointments this is the single greatest argument to do so.
If you like these tips... buy the entire book. My book, ClipperGuy Says... Get Busy is the ultimate beauty and barber professional business builder book. Buy it today!
