Emu marketing - brilliant
We were miles from nowhere, between Atlanta and Savannah, GA. We needed gas. We needed a bathroom. We needed cold drinks. We pulled off the highway. Like many highway exits this one had 2 gas stations directly opposite each other on one side of the interstate. The one on the south side of the road was your typical BP station and mini mart. The one on the north was nearly identical… except for the emu. Like most highway interchanges this one has a bit of open land around and about the ramps and areas where to gas stations are. Some is farmed, most is empty. The station to the north had fenced in an area and had dug a small retention pond. Nature filled it with water and the geese naturally showed up. Then the guy got smart. He got an emu, and a llama and a goat and a cow. He put them in the fenced area to drink the water and maintain the grass. Next he got a bunch of emu and goat and llama food and he got a sign. That is it. Master plan. Where would you stop? Here or across the street? Simple but brilliant marketing. This guy sells most all the gas on these here corners. He sells most all of the soda and most all the chips. He sells 100% of the emu food too! When we stopped I counted the cars. 26 cars at the emu station… and a total of ZERO at the BP across the street. And he is not even a brand name station. Just a simple business man trying to make a buck. Nicely done if I do say so myself. When the going gets tough, get an emu!
